You understand the point. It does not take much to be a celebrity in today’s society. With social networking sites like Twitter, Myspace, Youtube, and Facebook peoples route to a celebrity like status can be reached very easily, and does not always constitute productivity or talent. Yes, people have used these new channels as a way to showcase talent, like stars such as Colbie Collait, who have used Myspace as a springboard into record deals. Her website even claims her to be the â€Å"first true myspace. com discovery†(Caillat). But on the ladder side of that success take a look at Brian Collins, who has gathered over 4 million hits on Youtube for his famous debacle of a local Indiana sports broadcast (Boom Goes the Dynamite 2006). Is it not a far stretch to consider him a celebrity too? Yet he is not in a traditional celebrity form that is indeed ‘celebrated’. For the contents of this paper trying to establish reasons for celebrities over arching power in today’s capitalistic world, it is going to take a deeper look into what a celebrity actually is. This paper is focused on celebrities who have used their power to dive into different careers, and become global icons. Celebrities who gain and demand the constant attention of the media are certainly people who we celebrate. These types of media age icons of whom we continue to call celebrities are people who transcend their niche markets and are known to the global widespread audience. Using the music industry as an example, the band Death Cab for Cutie, a personal favorite, is a popular alternative indie-producing band. Death Cab for Cutie is popular within its genre, and niche audience, but not to well known outside of that small bubble. Than examining someone like Kanye West who dubbed himself the next ‘king of pop’ who is originally a rapper, or what he would consider ‘preacher’ has done so much for music, and has pursued other career agenda’s that have transcended him outside of the rap niche and is known by all citizens with any media intelligence. This is the true subject related focus for the paper. How have these megastars been able to travel across different markets not only in their original niche industry but across others such clothing lines, TV shows, product advertising, political agenda’s etc? The answer lays within us the consumer, and the new age media models. We as consumers give them the ability to have this power along with the increasing amounts of media attention celebrities are receiving. Particularly thinking about the easier way it is to garnish attention in today’s audience networking-centered world. It seems as though celebrities have remained the stagnate powerhouses of the drastically changing landscape, but how have they done it? To understand these questions, and to provide answers it is key to establish the power that celebrities have on society and their ability transcend and integrate across media platforms, through their influence and power. Secondly to portray how the use of that power has been taken advantage to create this brand that is Celebrity. It is certain that celebrities have large influence in the complicated media landscape. Today you cannot spend 15 seconds of the day without some sort of advertisement pushed down your throat. In fact 20% of all advertisements placed on TV in 2006-featured celebrities (Story). This percentage is undeniably growing. Certain advertisements are featuring celebrities in new venues, such as the commercial sponsor for a product. For example, Ashton Kutcher’s series of commercials for COOLPIX, or music icon Sean Diddy Comes sponsoring his own vodka brand, Ciroc vodka. This is the new trend in celebrity marketing, and is definitely gaining them exposure, more importantly capital. These types advertisements sit aside from the natural movie trailers, or random products that are commercialized with megastars who seemingly now dominate the commercialized world. Justin Timberlake and Peyton Manning featured in a series of commercials for selling High Definition Televisions for Sony. Not only are celebrities everywhere on your television sets, but they also have power in the political landscape as well. â€Å"Celebrities—people who are’’ as Daniel Boorstin put it, â€Å"well known for their well-known ness†Ã¢â‚¬â€are more celebrated than ever† (Robinson). Once they rise to national or global renown, whatever the reason, their fame becomes a kind of capital that can be converted into money or political influence (Robinson). We experience the acts that Bono has done, putting African support on the map, or Angelina Jolie’s UNHCR pushing improvements for the Worlds Child Refugee’s (Dalia). Not to mention the large amounts of celebrities who are pushing global climate change, and other global issue campaigns that we learn about through television, film, and advertisements. In this same article the author notes another strong point when talking about the ability of a powerhouse celebrity to create a section of the public who can share common interests, and experiences through simply by being invested in the similar subjects (Robinson). It can be said that today’s celebrities are a constant bond in today’s diversifying Internet aged world. They are the shared experience in a communication world that is becoming increasingly individualized. We can go through many different mediums to watch TV, but we cannot change who is promoting it, or starring in it. With cable, film, and basically all communication networks promoting to the niche audiences, it is the celebrity that is the common mold transcending above our niche interests. There faces are everywhere you look. Furthermore all it takes for Celebrities these days to reach their audiences on a more personal level is social networking cites like Twitter, or Facebook. The number of celebrity twitter accounts is large, and creates massive followers. Athletes twitter messages have even been the topic of Sportscenter conversation. This is another way for celebrities to market themselves to larger audiences; more proof to say that there appeal has never been stronger. Celebrities are well aware of the power they possess. They globalize themselves, and soak up all the attention they can receive to market themselves and create their own brands. Brands that can push political agenda’s, endorse products, market clothing lines, and promote own individual work, the possibilities are endless. It’s always been known that celebrities have had huge impact on the fashion industry. Whether its Sean Diddy Comes producing clothing lines, Michael Jordan promoting his shoes, or Paris Hilton promoting her handbags, its always been an interest, but they are becoming ever so powerful. By an article labeled STAR POWER the editor of GQ was quoted that celebrities directly affect fashion in a big way, claiming, â€Å"From a designers standpoint, celebrities validate trends†(Cotton Incorporated). Even more straight forward â€Å"Celebrities are our new designers,† said Irenka Jacobean, editor-in-chief of Accessories Magazine â€Å"The Red Carpet is our new runway† (Cotton Incorporated). The Hip-Hop community clothing lines have left their own stamp on celebrity brands. Rappers such as Eminem, JAY-Z, Sean Combs, and Snoop Dogg all have their own original clothing lines (Nellis). Clothing outlets like Macy’s have had half their clothing outlet be those brands (Towle). So now rappers have power over retail clothing stores, how does this make sense? When researching into any advertisement-affected market, which we all know is almost everyone; the celebrity affects every single facet of the market in some way. Her show has garnished worldwide attention for years, and whether she is promoting a book, or backing a political candidate, her voice is heard, and her power is overwhelming. She was rated the second most powerful celebrity in the world by Forbes magazine only behind the possibly the world’s most famous women these days, Angelina Jolie. Who is also pushing her own brand as exampled earlier in the paper, not to mention her box-office success? Her latest thriller Wanted in which she starred gathered 35 million dollars in its first weekend in box office revenue (Administrator, box office). Surprise No? She has also been recognized on more than one occasion by the Academy, and been pushing political agenda’s with effectiveness for years, as noted earlier. It’s obvious that celebrities have been able to build power and furthermore build on their power. Taking advantage of every opportunity they receive. These people are the faces of our national media, and the focused icons of our time. Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, Kanye West, Lebron James, Brad Pitt, Sean Combs are all icons within the public sphere in which anything they say, or do does not go undocumented. The opposite end of undocumented, news about these figures is nationally recognized, and celebrated. Through the increasing amounts of brands that have become the celebrity, this putting on of a public face, can also be detrimental to their image if not treated carefully. While the media is watching your every move, making sure your public image is always being â€Å"celebrated† and not getting in trouble with the law, or acting out of line in public is ever so important to keeping the brand successful. Though he was able to bounce back, Kobe Bryant a world-renowned basketball player lost plenty of endorsements and money after he had been accused of rape in Denver, Colorado. They have been able integrate across multiple media platforms, and control industries through the power that we give them as consumers, and the large amounts of media attention they receive. All the meanwhile capitalizing on the dramatically changing Internet aged world by remaining a solid constant in which people can relate with. I was on-time to every meeting, and not only that but I feel I was talkative and expressive about the direction of our paper’s and shared all my idea’s and opinions. Secondly I volunteered to put together our original project plan that was submitted for approval. So I also did something that was outside of the meeting process. Whether they brought good or bad qualities from their profession, they all affected the outcome. The leadership skills of Courtney Vance, the compassion of Dorian Harwood, and the opinionated Tony Danza affected the actions and decisions in the jury room. Courtney Vance is a high school football coach; his position in the jury room is a foreman. On the football field, Vance acts as a mediator, a leader, and an organizer. As a foreman for this trial, Vance definitely carries all those traits into the jury room with him. If it were not for Vance, there would not have been any order in the jury room. He acts as a coach in the jury room as he formed fine lines of respect. He acts as a mediator for all of the arguments that went on in the jury room. Every time, Vance is there to calm everyone down and gain back order in the room. His leadership skills also shine in the jury room as well. He controls and leads every discussion, speaking order, voting, and demonstration. Vance takes on the leading role and handles it well. He also brings organization into the jury room by organizing the juries, the discussions, and the votes. With the excellent traits that Vance brings into the jury room, he allows the trial to run smoothly and effectively. Dorian Harwoods profession as nurse also shapes his actions in the jury room. In the jury room, he acts with compassion and respect. As a nurse he does the same. His compassion lies in caring for another. He relates that to the trial by thinking of the boy as one of his patients. He wants him to have a fair chance at life, and therefore wants him to have a fair trial. In the jury room, he acts with respect because he is very unsure about the case, and really does not know how he feels about things. So when it is his turn to talk he passes to hear the others before he makes the wrong assumption. With these actions he shows a lot of respect for not only the boy on trial, but also to the other juries. Harwood definitely shows compassion and respect in the jury room, and all of these strong traits come from his experience as a nurse. Tony Danza, a salesman, definitely brings his working traits with him in the jury room. As a salesman, he is impatient, opinionated, and rude. Tony does not care about anyone but himself. He shows that he is very impatient by not even thinking about the trial but rather the baseball tickets that he has for that night. He just wants to get out of there as soon as he can. He is very opinionated and that definitely stands out in the jury room. He does not care what anyone has to say. He has his own beliefs and does not care or want to hear anyone elses views. He is also known to be rude, because he shows no compassion or thought towards the boy on trial and he just wants to get it over with. He does not even stop to think that someones life is on the line, he is too concerned about his own. Tonys profession does not give him the best qualities, as he does not have the best qualities in the jury room. Courtney Vance, Dorian Harwood, and Tony Danza are three men who are shaped by the professions in which they live. Their professions give the men certain qualities, good and bad, that they carry with them into other parts of their lives. As a student social worker, the PCF governs my development and practicing the application of theory is a critical stage in learning. Assessing And Improving A Learning Environment I graduated with Diploma of Nursing seven years ago. After graduated, I work in general surgical ward for five years. Later I went to Middle East to work for a year. Back in Middle East I worked in an oncology ward. Currently I work as a clinical instructor with one of the nursing private college in Kuching. The practical placements for the students are one of the hospitals here. Now, I am attached to the oncology wards, which consists of two wards with thirty beds each. The students that came for their clinical practices are from year one to year three. At the same time, they are other students from other college attach here too. The maximum numbers of students entering the ward are only fifteen per ward. In this assignment I am going to write about how my current workplace is a good learning environment and how to improve it. According to Hood and Leddy, (2003) learning process is a dependant on an interchange between the learner and environments. Since the ward restricts the amount of students, the ward is a conducive place to learn. They do not have to fight for procedures since everyone would have adequate experiences. This is an advantages compare to other wards at the hospital. Learning materials such as pamphlet and drug books are also available at the nursing counters for the staff and students to read. The latest updates or protocols are also displayed in the notice board. To support the learning, it is better if there is a library in the unit or within the hospital compound. With library available, it would provide the staff and the student, books and journals not only from local publisher but also from overseas. Ajuwon, (2003) thinks that computers and internets are important in medical education. In my current ward they are no computers or even internet connection is provided. It is difficult for the students or the ward staff to access information or knowledge during working hours. Through surfing the internet it will enhance their level of knowledge and understanding. Not only for internet access, it would make patients data and records much more accessible. I believe if computers are provided here, the learning process would be more accessible not only for students but also for the staffs. At the same time the students will not assume the role of the instructor as their walking encyclopaedia as student would be more self directed. Ogier, (1986) mentions that the staff nurse is part of the student nurse clinical practice. In my ward the staff nurses are keen to teach the nursing students. They dont mind spending their time to explain and guide the students. Sometimes they will even approach the students if they are keen to do some procedures under their guidance. In my opinion the student have to be more active in their learning. Sweeney, (1986) notes that in nursing clinical practice the better approach for teaching is the student should be more student centred than teacher centred. I always encourage my student to be more initiative and active in their learning. For example when they find some interesting cases, instead of asking me immediately about it, I will ask them to look for the information first and we will discuss again once the information is gathered. I find out by using this method their level of understanding would be more compared to when I would just explaining the subject immediately. Brown, (2009) concluded that interdisciplinary collaboration would enhance learning and prepare the students for their collaborative interactions in their future employment. In my current workplace, the physiotherapist, dietician and social worker would come and review the patient twice a week. I think, if the students could tag them around for a day, the students would benefit a lot. The students would gain new knowledge and would be expose to how other departments worked. Quinn, (1995) argues that learning in clinical placement is much more meaningful and relevant than classrooms. Specialist ward round or grand round are done twice a week. During this time the oncologist, radiologist and pharmacist would do their clinical round together. The students are encouraged to join the round. During these rounds a lot of knowledge would pass around as the three groups including nurses would discuss about patient care and disease. Sometimes the specialist would stay after the ward round just to do bedside teaching with the students. Nursing is all about lifelong learning. Bahn, (2007) mentions that if nurses stops learning, they would not be able to keep up with changes and adapt themselves. There is two way of learning which is informal or formal learning. Spouse, (2000) defines informal learning as learning takes place outside of formal learning but still within the learners learning context. Spouse also mentions that handover reports, report writing and social interactions among colleagues are one way of informal learning. Before the shift starts students are not allowed to touch the patient without listening to the handover. They are encouraged to write down the reports and listen to the handover at the same time. Laird, (1985) mentions that effective learning will be taken place when all sense are stimulated. His study found out that hearing is the second most effective way of learning after seeing. Before the end of the shift I always gather the student for a short discussion. Usually I will pick one stude nt to present her or his patient to the other students. The student will also share their experience among themselves and at the same time if they have any queries it could be clarified there and then. Examples, a first timer student doing dressing would share her experience with the other students and they will do post mortem together under my guidance. Bahn, (2007) agrees that nurse need to continue learning to ensure for safe nursing practice. One of formal learning that available here is continuous nursing education (CNE). CNE is held every first Friday of the month. The talk would be given by nurse educators, ward sisters or by fellow doctors sometimes. From here the staff and students can get their latest updates in nursing care and gain new knowledge. This CNE is important especially for the nursing students since they did not learn in depth about care of patient with chemotherapy and radiotherapy in classrooms. Last month, few of my students manage to attend CNE with the title of Oral care for patient with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Later they shared the knowledge with the rest of their peers. Not only exchange of knowledge and experience happens, but at the same time their level of understanding increase by the act of explaining. Knowles, (1990) agrees that adult should be given proactive approach to learning which involves them in decision making. Most of my students that came here are year one students that had never been into clinical placement. What they had is only theory and minimal practical knowledge. The only practical knowledge they had is hands on the mannequin in skills lab. Humanist believe that people will learn by their own when their need arise. Based on that belief, when students undergo clinical placement, they will be forced to learn skills in order to adapt to their surroundings. Examples are the skills of taking blood pressure. Taking blood pressure is an essential skill for every nurse, without that skill they will not be able to function in their practice area. The students only learn how to take blood pressure in theory and because of that when they came for their practical they have to pick up the skills. Honey and Mumford, (1992) says they are four ways of learning, which are pragmatist, activist, theorist and reflector. I had given the Learning Style Questionnaire (LSQ) to a group of six of first year students. From there I found out majority of them are pragmatist. According to Honey and Mumford, a pragmatist is where the student learns by doing. I showed and ask them to play around with the sphygmomanometer to familiarise themselves with the equipment. Later I showed them the correct way to take the blood pressure by using one of the students as the model. After that, I paired them and rotate each other to take their own blood pressure. Once they are confident enough, I will let them to try to the patient. By doing this, the student would grasp the idea of blood pressure taking. Bloom, (1956) had identified three learning domains which is cognitive, affective and psychomotor. The students need to improve their cognitive because they are lack of knowledge. They have the skills and attitude but most of them cant tell me the rationale or why certain things need to be done in that way. Students need to be more self directed in their own education. Darbyshire, (1993) mentions that not all nursing students are motivated to become self directed and autonomous in their learning. I believe the way for teaching my students are a mixture of student centred and teacher centred learning. If the students depend too much on me as their clinical instructors, they will not be able to use their critical thinking and decide their own learning needs. At the same time, the students need to be told of what and how to learn. In my opinion the students need to slowly transform their own learning from spoon feeding method to an independent leaner in order to have established a strong foundation and to build self confidence for a more effective self directed study later. Gopee, (2008) says that nursing students should be slowly guided into adult learning. The role model that I had chosen is one of my colleagues, Clinical Instructor JV. She is one of my colleagues that also attached to the oncology ward here. Previously she had worked for nearly ten years as a staff nurse in oncology clinic in one of the hospital here. Gray and Smith, (2000) mentions a good mentor is a good role model as they are professional, organised, caring and self confident. I admire her way of work and how she handle the students. She is approachable and open to new ideas. Both of us always discuss how to improve our student learning. I also always ask her advice on how to overcome my problems with the students. Previously she used to be so strict with the students till the students are so scared of her. She is also easily irritated with the weaker students. When she realise that her teaching method is not appropriate she changed her method to a different way. JV also has good rapport with the ward sister and the ward staff. Every morning she will have small ta lk with the staff before starting our work. I believe my working place is a good place for learning environment. Although there are some areas to improve, especially in physical environment of the ward, learning still can take place. The attitude of the leaner also need to change. They have to be more initiative and not depending too much on their clinical instructor to feed them.
