We have been some of the most noble kings and queens in history (Michael, PI). We have survived slavery, mass genocides, civil wars, theorized and actual government plots. From slave cuffs to presidential cuffs, the strength and abilities presented by black individuals around he world is astounding. Despite all odd, statistics and stereo types here in the United States and around the globe African Americans continue to prove as a people, no matter the circumstance they have the ability to overcome any issue. Although it is clear that African Americans have great success, as with any culture there are great failures. In the United States African American Males make up 13. 5 cities in 2007 where African Americans. Within the subset of African American violence 93. 1 percent of document deaths were males. Between the age ranges of 15 to 24, African American Men have been victims of violent crimes that include, robbery, self destructive acts, simple to aggravated assault, gang violence, and police brutality (AP, POP). In contacts to the President comments and setting up meetings between the professor and the arresting police office, no media coverage was giving to the malicious homicide in the brutal killing of this honor student (Morocco, PI). Mr.. Morocco is not saying that the president is reasonable for Daring’s death, he states the fact the he is disappointed young man’s killer. According to New York Times There are more black men in prison than college. Only 5% of black men are in college. 70 percent of black men have experienced long- term unemployment (AP, POP) The African-American males comprise over fifty-five percent of the nation’s prison population, one out of every fourteen black men is incarcerated for an crime. Between the ages of 20 to 29, one out of every 4 black males is in prison, on parole, or on probation for an alcohol or drug-related crime (AP, POP). Over the last decade there were more than 1. 4 million sentenced inmates at the end of 2003, an estimated 403,165 were Black men between ages 20 and 39. Compared with 12. 3 percent of young Latino men and 6. 7 percent of young white men, 76 percent of young black men are behind bars (AP, POP). . When compared to other races. Although it is clear that black on black crimes exist, in the United States we have a long history of white on black crimes. November 25, 2006, Sean Bell was hot and killed on the morning after his bachelor party, and two of his friends where severely wounded. Mr.. Bell was holding his bachelor party at Club Koala in Jamaica section of Queens, New York. This night club was under investigated by seven undercover police detectives, as a result of accusations that the owners of the club had been steering prostitution (Baker, POP).. According to Report Karen Zaire of the New York Times, Gunman had an argument inside the club with a woman and threatened to get a gun. One of Bell’s friends was though to have said â€Å"you, get my gun† as they left the scene. Fearing that a shooting might occur, one of the plain-clothed African American officer Scared Sonora followed the men to their vehicle while alerting his backup team, prompting the team to confront Bell and his companions before they could leave the scene. Sonora held out his badge, and identified himself as a police officer, and told the car to stop. However, Bell accelerated the vehicle and hit Sonora, then striking the unmarked police minivan. Scared Sonora believed he saw Gunman reaching for a gun while in the car, yelled â€Å"gun† to other police at the scene, and opened fire on the car. All officers and detectives at that point Joined him in shooting at the car, firing 50 bullets in a few seconds (Zaire, POP). On March 16, 2007, three of the five police officers involved in the shooting were grand Jury indictment. Officer Michael Oliver, who fired thirty one of the fifty shots ND Officer Scared Sonora, who fired the first shot, faced charges of manslaughter, reckless endangerment and assault, while Detective Marc Cooper faced charge of two counts of reckless endangerment. The three detectives pleaded not guilty at the arraignment hearing on March 19, 2007. Detectives Sonora and Oliver were released on bail and Detective Cooper on his own recognize. On April 25, 2008, all three of the police officers indicted were acquitted on all counts (Baker, Pl 7). On June 7, 1998, James Byrd Jar, accepted a ride from Shawn Allen Berry, Lawrence sat ride of his live. Instead of taking James home, the three men took James behind a convenience store, beating him unconscious, stripped him naked, chained him by the ankles to their pickup truck, and dragged him for three miles. Forensic evidence suggests that James attempted to keep his head up while being dragged behind the truck, an autopsy suggested James was alive during much of the dragging, and he only died after his right arm and head were severed after his body hit a culvert, although the men claimed that Bard’s throat had been slashed before he was ragged (National News Briefs, 23). The Tuskegee syphilis experiment was the clinical trial study conducted between 1932 and 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama, by the United States Public Health Service. Investigators recruited 399 impoverished African-American men with syphilis for research related to the natural progression of the untreated disease. This experiment can be compared to mass genocides (Prater, 2007). On May 16, 1997, President Bill Clinton formally apologized and held a ceremony for the Tuskegee duty participants. If you search almost anywhere on the internet about creativity and public schools you will run into a video by a man named Sir Ken Robinson. He emphasizes that schools kill creativity in every way. On the other hand, President Barack Obama disagrees whole heartedly. Both of these men agree that creativity is important to children and schools but they disagree on whether or not creativity is being implemented in schools. Robinson stated in his lectured at TED 2006, â€Å"I believe this passionately, that we don’t grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out of it† (Ken Robinson. TED2006). He goes to say that education is the same all around the world and everyone puts emphasis on the same subjects. â€Å"At the top are mathematics and languages, then the humanities, and the bottom are the arts† (Robinson). Schools are so focused on standardized test scores and core subjects that the arts are left behind. There is also a common belief that as school budgets are cut the first things to go are the arts. Obama believes the opposite of what Ken Robinson believes is occurring, saying that schools are taking a great initiative to bring back creativity to our public schools. In a speech at Benjamin Banneker High School in 2011, President Obama told students, â€Å"You’ve got to wonder. You’ve got to question. You’ve got to explore. And every once in a while, you need to color outside the lines† (Barack Obama. Back-to-School Speech†). Several states, have instated a â€Å"Creativity Index† which instead of just telling the state school’s standardized test scores will tell â€Å"how effective it is at â€Å"teaching, encouraging and fostering creativity in students†Ã¢â‚¬  (Philip Petrov. â€Å"Measuring Creativity in the Public Schools†). When discussing creativity in the public school sys tem, one person’s opinion can drastically differ from another. Most can agree that creativity has been pushed aside in favor of the sciences and mathematics in the past. Two main opinions that ost people share are school kill creativity or creativity is beginning to blossom in public schools. Ken Robinson’s opinion is widely accepted and discussed. Some universities even use his video as a basis for a course. Robinson states that the purpose of public education is to â€Å"produce university professors† and as children get older schools focus more on one side of the brain, the left. He says that the whole reason for public education being created was to â€Å"meet the needs of industrialism†, now â€Å"the whole system of public education around the world is a protracted process of university entrance†. The problem with this, according to Robison, is that because schools focus on core subjects, students that are very creative â€Å"think they’re not, because the thing that they were good at at school wasn’t valued, or actually stigmatized†. Also, over the years degrees have become less valuable. Where once a BA was required, now a MA is required and it becomes a lot harder to get a job. The difficulty of finding a job discourages students from achieving those degrees (Robinson. TED2006). A lot of people believe that school these days is strictly focused on standardized testing. These tests are so standardized that it makes it hard for children that don’t fit the mold to pass. This causes schools to lose money for more creative endeavors and children to think that they are inadequate. Mark LeShay believes that schools are â€Å"systematically eliminating creativity, the very thinking that we now find ourselves in shortage of to solve healthcare issues and to reset global policy†. Businesses are working hard to hire and create employees that are creative while schools are teaching children the opposite. Our country needs people to think outside the box but â€Å"we find people bred in a system that punishes mistakes. LeShay thinks that â€Å"our public education system is at the end of its life. † (LeShay) When most children start of school in preschool and early elementary they are told to do nothing but be creative. Once they hit about third grade the standardized tests start to take over and creativity is suppressed to make room for all of the facts that children must memorize to pass the exams. There are negatives and positives about this. The 2004 New York State Education Department’s policy brief stated that the positive effects of high stakes exams were that they â€Å"provide students with clear info about their own skills, motivate students to work harder in school, send clearer messages to students about what to study and help students associate ad align personal efforts with rewards†. The negative effects were that high stakes exams â€Å"frustrate students and discourage them from trying, make students more competitive, and cause students to devalue grades and assessments†. These tests put a lot of pressure on the students as well as the teachers and they are so stressed out about making the scores that they need to keep their jobs and schools that other things like creativity and individualism are lost (New York State Education Department 9-12) The goals of education are controversial and not many people can agree on what they are. A commonly shared opinion of the â€Å"purpose of education is to prepare students for the â€Å"real world† to â€Å"succeed†Ã¢â‚¬ . Children are constantly being prepared for the workforce and what will come later in life. Another goal of education is to teach students how to socialize and communicate† which will prepare them for adulthood. Dara Adib believes that if schools harm socialization they will harm â€Å"creativity and reasoning†. Adib thinks that â€Å"school instills fear, overwhelming students with the possibility of getting a bad grade. Unnecessary control, brainwashing, and disc ouragement harm the possibility of independent thought by teaching a mindset of conformity, measured through grades and tests† (Adib). Adib states that the problem with education at this time is that â€Å"concepts are introduced, covered very quickly, and then left behind because it’s time to move on to another concept†. This causes students to not be able to retain large amounts of information because new things are constantly being added to the piles of information they must keep track of. The reason that so many people that become billionaires are drop outs it because they were not able to conform and had to let their creativity blossom. Schools teach students how to conform and be like everyone else. â€Å"After children have attended school for a while, they become more cautious and less innovative . . . teachers, peers, and the educational system as a whole all diminish children’s urge to express their creative possibilities† (Dacey amp; Lennon). Some of the ways that it is believed that schools suppress creativity to the point of extinction are surveillance, evaluation, rewards, competition, over control, restricting choice, and most of all pressure. Teachers must constantly hover over children to make sure that they are on task which causes them to be paranoid about whether they are doing what they are supposed to. Second, children are constantly evaluation on their progress. Grades are so important to children. Their parents want to know how they are doing in school and with quizzes, tests, projects, and papers constantly being assigned and graded children are too worried about how they will do to be proud of their accomplishments and show a more creative side. There are also rewards. Parents and teachers use prizes to influence children to do what they are told so that just being creative for the sake of creativity is no longer valued. Over-control and restricting choices are also two big factors. Teachers have to give very specific instructions so that students will know exactly how to do something so that originality and the ability to think for themselves are lost. Lastly, there is so much pressure for children to do well that they lose the enjoyment of the activity. There are usually very high expectations for children. They must always improve and are not allowed to take a break. The guidelines for schools are so strict that it is impossible for children to meet them and often they go beyond their â€Å"developmental capabilities† (Goleman, Kaufman, amp; Ray (61-62) One reason that people say schools need to add back creativity is that the U. S. Workforce is demanding creative workers. The Report: Ready to Innovate used polls taken from â€Å"155 school superintendents and 89 employers† to determine what demonstrates creativity and what the greatest indicator of creativity was. There is a miscommunication between employers and schools on what constitutes as creativity. Both agree that â€Å"ability to identify new patterns of behavior or new combination of actions and integration of knowledge across different disciplines† are very high creativity indicators. Where they disagree is what the highest demonstration of creativity is. Businesses say that â€Å"problem-identification or articulation† is the best demonstrator of creativity while schools say that problem-solving shows the greatest amount of creativity. Because of this disagreement â€Å"eighty-five percent of employers concerned with hiring creative people say they can’t find the applicants they seek†. The two groups of people also disagree about whether or not their workers/students meet all of the criteria or not. What they overwhelmingly do agree on is that â€Å"creativity is increasingly important in U. S. workplaces and that arts-training are crucial to developing creativity† (Lichtenberg, et al. 2-3). In 2010, The George Lucas Educational Foundation asked if school standards kill creativity. Claus von Zastrow concluded that standards could support instead of suppress creativity. He says that standards create thoughts of uniformity causing people to shy away from them. Because when schools get low scores they get budget cuts schools have been forced to teach to test giving standards a bad rap. Despite this there are schools that make it a priority to help their students creativity flourish. A school in Ohio actually had students do creative projects based on state standards. Some teachers are so afraid that they will not be able to finish the curriculum if they do not strictly adhere to the standards. Zastrow disagrees and says that projects and other creative activities can help the teacher meet their standards and students become more creative (Zastrow). An elementary school in Ohio put this into practice. The fifth graders of the National Inventers Hall of Fame School were given the task of finding out how to reduce sound in the library. They worked in groups, supported each other, wrote proposals, and designed ways to muffle sound. Throughout the entire project the kids were able to show their creativity while working hard. They enjoyed themselves and were able to think like adults. At the end of the project the children had not only completed a project, but met all of the fifth-grade curriculum requirements. The children understood â€Å"sound waves to per-unit cost calculations to the art of persuasive writing† (Bronson amp; Merryman) While America is starting to work on creativity the focus is still on raising test scores in core subjects. Other countries have different approaches to their education systems. China is coming up with different ways to assess students in a way that does not let schools be ranked by standardized test scores. Some of the stratagies include â€Å"granting more flexibility and autonomy to students and schools in deciding what to learn, more courses outside traditional disciplines, and a more authentic assessment and evaluation scheme. The United Kingdom is working to â€Å"build stronger links† with other countries and their education system. Singapore has launched a curriculum reform that â€Å"develops students into a community of active, creative learners with critical-thinking skills. South Korea has worked to foster â€Å"self-motivated capacity and implement(s) learner-oriented education that suits students’ capability, aptitude, and career-development needs† (Yong Zhao 13-14) Also in 2010, Newsweek did an article about the â€Å"Creativity Crisis†. Reporters Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman delved into the research about the d ecline in American creativity and how it could be fixed. The definition of creativity was different for almost everyone that was interviewed in the research. This made it very hard to come up with a concrete definition to compare to. The accepted definition was â€Å"the production of something original and useful†. The research that Bronson and Merryman looked at way from a study by E. Paul Torrance. Torrance conducted tests on 400 children from Minneapolis. These children were then tracked for fifty years and every accomplishment was recorded. Since then Torrance’s tests have â€Å"become the gold standard in creativity assessment†. His creativity index predicted the outcomes of the children. Based on his research many states are now working on their own creativity indexes to figure out what levels their schools are at and how successful their children will be. Other countries are taking great initiative to bring back creativity. Britain â€Å"revamped† its secondary-school curriculum to fit in with Torrance’s tests. Some even say that instead of just enhancing the arts, the arts should be added into to all the classes students will take (Bronson amp; Merryman). Massachusetts has become a leading force in the creativity movement. The Massachusetts Creativity Index is â€Å"based in part on the creative opportunities in each school as measured by the availability of classes and before-school and after-school programs . . . that provide creative opportunities for students including . . arts education, debate clubs, science fairs, theatre performances, concerts, filmmaking and independent research. † The Legislation resisted combining creativity with the arts because they wanted creativity to be measured not only in the arts but in other courses. The indexes and efforts being made are just beginning to form but they are al ready getting a lot of attention from other states. This index is being implemented involuntarily unlike the index being created in California (Petrov). Two other states that are working hard to foster creativity in schools are California and Oklahoma. The state legislature is working to create an Advisory committee on Creative and Innovative Education. The Senate Bill 789 is â€Å"similar to the one already signed by the Governor of Massachusetts† and will create an Index similar to Torrance’s to inspire creativity in their public schools. This bill would â€Å"require the Governor, Senate Committee on Rules, and Speaker of the Assembly to appoint 15 members who would be required to be experts in, or have experience in, the fields of education, public policy, artistic development, workforce development, or cultural development. These people would be spread throughout the state. This index being created by the California Legislature would give teachers and schools a way to rate their progress to better nurture creativity and innovation in their students. It also is a voluntary index. U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan believes that â€Å"The arts can no longer be treated as a frill†¦Arts education is esse ntial to stimulating the creativity and innovation that will prove critical for young Americans competing in a global economy. Duncan has also stated that the Education Department will start conducting surveys of â€Å"school principals, music teachers, and visual arts specialists† which has not happened for ten years. He is working with Obama on this project (Eger). In his Back-To-School speech in 2011 President Barack Obama stated what he thought school was for. He believes that schools is for â€Å"discovering new passions, acquiring new skills† and preparing for future careers. Obama goes on to say that while in school it is important to study a wide variety of subjects to discover what people want to do later in life. One hour you can be an artist; the next, an author; the next, a scientist, or a historian, or a carpenter. † The Presidents also admits that he was not always very good in school but after taking an ethics class in eighth grade he discovered he like it. Obama told the students that attended his speech that the country needed their creativity and that it was crucial to the success of the country (Obama) There are two main views on creativity in public schools. While the general consensus is that creativity is vital to a child’s development the disagreement is whether or not schools enhance or inhibit a child’s creativity. One is that schools kill and suppress creativity. That side argues that standardized test and evaluations of students constantly put too much stress on teachers and students and creativity is left in the dust. They believe that education is about getting students ready for the â€Å"real world† and the constant pressure work will have on them. Children that do not fit into the general mold are discouraged from doing what they love and are good at. The workforce is constantly looking for higher degrees so a high school or college degree is no longer valued and those students are discouraged from even trying in school anymore. Standardized tests are a large argument that this side makes. Standardized tests cause students to have to focus on memorizing so much material that they do not learn what is really important and cannot let their creativity shine. The children that are not good at tests start to think that they are bad at school and lose faith in the education system. This is a bad thing because the workforce is looking for more and more creative people these days. The goals of education have become blurry and old ideas are no longer valued or practiced. This makes students hate school and think it is a bad thing because all of the so called â€Å"good goals of education† are no longer used and school is based almost solely on testing. The other side to creativity in schools is the group that agrees that in the past there have been problems but presently there are a lot of things being done to make creativity a large part of education again. Because the workforce is so demanding of creative workers, schools have started to make creativity a more important goal in the classroom. Some schools are finding better ways to meet the entire curriculum that must be taught in a way that makes students be creative and think for themselves. A lot of states in the United States are implementing â€Å"Creativity Index’s† which are standards that show how well creativity is being taught and encouraged in schools. This is a good way to add back creativity to the system because it allows for the schools to keep having standards like they are used but are still able to incorporate creativity back into the system. The United States is not the only country working to add back creativity. Countries all over Europe and Asia are finding ways to help their students become more creative and actually enjoy school. For a child to flourish in the workforce and in their own lives creativity must be present. Without creativity, everyone would be uniform and there would be no new ideas. If steps are not being taken to make creativity important to the education system our country and world will crumble. No matter what any person’s opinion on whether or not creativity is killed or encouraged by schools, most people believe that education is very important to a child’s success in life and must be encouraged throughout their entire educational career. Horror stories have existed for thousands of years, initially in the form of verbal communication. ROLE OF HUMAN CAPITAL IN NEW VENTURES 1. INTRODUCTION With the increase in the rise of entrepreneurial ventures, it is necessary to understand the factors that determine success or failure of these ventures. One of such factors that have been considered by researchers is human capital (Bruderl, Preisendorfer and Ziegler, 1992). This report considers the function of the human capital element in a startup business.Based on a collation and analysis of previous research works on human capital in the entrepreneurial field, it was discovered that the various aspects of founder’s human capital have a role to play in attracting venture capital and improving the performance of the venture. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW 2. 1 Human Capital Human capital refers to the skills, abilities, knowledge acquired through work and educational experiences (Baron and Shane, 2008).The concept of human capital has been underpinned by several theories among which the theory of entrepreneurship, resource-based t heory and human capital theory and these theories would be discussed. The theory of entrepreneurship places emphasis on the fact that the entrepreneur has the responsibility of decision making (Casson, 2005). Thus, the entrepreneur is to analyse relevant information which would be used in making business decisions (Ganotakis, 2012). The recognition of markets for the products and services are part of the decisions to be made and would therefore determine a firm’s progress and accomplishment.Casson (2005) further argues that entrepreneurs need to have the right professional skills and work experience as it is these competencies would impact upon performance. The resource based theory (RBT) places value on resources which is argued to be a source of competitive advantage for the firm (Barney, 1991). Human capital is identified as one of such resources. In particular, Barney (1991) argues that a firm’s management team can be indispensable, rare and imperfectly imitable an d has the capacity for producing a perpetual competitive advantage.Alvarez and Busenitz (2001) examine the relationship between RBT and entrepreneurship. They suggest that entrepreneurship necessitates the founder’s cognizance of opportunities, the ability to obtain the resources to utilize the opportunities and the ability of the firm to fuse homogenous inputs into heterogeneous outputs. They further identified that entrepreneurial awareness, perception, knowledge and the ability to organise resources as resources in their own right. These two theories therefore place significance on the capabilities and resources of the entrepreneur.A theoretical foundation of how these capabilities can be measured is provided by human capital theory which was pioneered by Becker in 1964. The theory implies that an individual’s human capital is the skills and knowledge that can be of use to an organization and as such, employees’ salaries/wages was viewed as a return on the in vestment in human capital. The theory provides claims that the entrepreneurial team who have more experience tend to perform much better than those with less experience (Shrader and Siegel, 2007).This theory categorises the characteristics of an entrepreneur into general and specific human capital. 2. 1. 1 General Human Capital General human capital refers to skills acquired through formal education, training and work experience which can be transferred to other jobs in the market. The educational level of founders has been considered to be vital for a firm’s performance (Ganotakis, 2012). Education can provide the entrepreneur with a professional foundation and greater self-assurance as it is supposed to provide scenarios which encourage creativity and problem-solving ability.However, other results showed a negative relationship with growth and performance (Haber and Reichel, 2007; Bosma et al, 2004 ; Dichon, Menzies and Gasse, 2008). According to Deakins (2005), education d oes not influence growth but it may assist in making critical decisions. As such, education could be assumed to be more important for younger entrepreneurs who may not have a lot of experience. It is argued by Shrader and Siegel (2007) that the experience of the founders would aid them in making informed choices. Experience is also seen to influence business ideas and increase efficiency (Deakins, 2005).In contrast, some research works have also found negative relationships between work experience and firm formation and also performance (Ganotakis, 2012; Diochon, Menzies and Gasse, 2008). Ganotakis (2012), claims that this could be as a result of an over-confidence of the founders in their knowledge restraining them from gathering more information. 2. 1. 2 Specific Human Capital These are those skills which are specific to a particular work context and thus it might not be transferred to other professions. As such, these skills can assist the entrepreneur directly with managing the new venture (Ganotakis, 2012).These include entrepreneurial experience, industry-specific experience, managerial capabilities and technical experience. Industry specific experience has been found to have a positive effect on performance and the development of new ventures (Bosma et al, 2004; Dimov, 2010; Gimmon and Levie, 2009). Capelleras et al (2010), claim that this experience positively impacts the creation of ventures, but has little influence on their growth. It is believed that founders with the same sector experience would have a better knowledge of the opportunities and can benefit from past business ties.Entrepreneurship specific experience implies that the entrepreneur should have a previous experience in starting a business, running a company or having membership of an entrepreneurial association (Bosma et al, 2004; Baron and Shane, 2008). This experience does not have a direct effect on new venture growth but can aid in the pursuit of opportunities (Dimov, 2010). Manage rial experience is usually linked with the ability to organise resources and make strategic decisions (Ganotakis, 2012). It has been found that there is a positive relationship between managerial experience and performance (Ganotakis, 2012; Gimmon and Levie, 2009).However, Deakins (2005) believes that those with prior managerial experience may have a higher level of income they desire and may be unlikely to set up their own business as there is an uncertainty of a constant income flow especially at the gestation stages of the venture. Technical experience is gained in a specialised field or profession. Though Shrader and Siegel (2007) placed emphasis on this experience as useful in strategy implementation, research carried out by Ganotakis (2012) revealed that technical experience did not have a positive effect on performance.Thus, such experience should be accompanied by managerial experience. 2. 2 Human Capital and the Entrepreneurial Venture The theoretical background and explana tion of key concepts above has provided an insight into the subject of human capital. From literature, the importance of human capital is highlighted and three roles of human capital in an entrepreneurial venture can be identified and these would be explored for this purpose of this paper. Firstly, human capital can enhance in making and executing strategic decisions.Secondly, human capital can improve the performance of the new venture. Bruderl, Preisendorfer and Ziegler (1992) argue that better human capital increases the ability of the firm to attract customers and capital. From this, a third role can be identified which is human capital can enhance venture financing. These would be discussed in relation to past research and relevant theories. 3. METHODOLOGY The research was carried out by reviewing and analysing past research works on the topic of human capital as it relates to entrepreneurial ventures.The selection criteria for the resource materials used were peer-reviewed sch olarly journal articles. The time frame selected was from 2000 to 2012. This criterion was used so as to get reliable and up-to date information on the subject matter. 4. DISCUSSION This section explores the three factors identified in the foregoing. Decision making is very vital to a new venture. The success of a firm depends on the decisions made. The strategies adopted by a firm would reflect its competencies and would determine its competitive advantage which is line with resource-based and theory of entrepreneurship.Industry specific and technical experience of the founding team is argued to be valuable in the formulation and implementation of strategies and as such, they can make more informed decisions (Shrader and Siegel, 2007). These aspects of human capital could enhance decision making as knowledge of the market and industry would imply that the founder(s) is conversant with the process of gathering the relevant information. This experience is likely to lead to faster dec ision making (Forbes, 2005). Managerial capabilities could also be said to influence decision making as the entrepreneur would have experience n managing a firm and identifying appropriate markets (Ganotakis, 2012). It is crucial for new ventures to acquire financing for their operations at the start of the business. A higher human capital has been believed to attract capital (Bruderl, Preisendorfer and Ziegler, 1992; Baum and Silverman, 2004). In particular high educational qualifications can give signals to venture capital investors (Behrens et al, 2012). The reason for this may be that the investors believe that the founders can use their educational knowledge in managing the company and therefore they judge that their prospects are better.Seghers, Manigart and Vanacker (2012) also found out that business education and prior experience in accounting and finance increases a founder’s knowledge of financing alternatives. As such, the founder is able to access different sourc es of funding based on such knowledge. Another factor that affects venture financing is the social network ties the founder has (Zhang et al, 2012). Such networks would enable the founding team encounter people who could give them the required funding. Industry-specific experience is also vital in developing broad networks.Investments in human capital are widely believed to impact performance (Unger et al, 2011; Bosma et al, 2004; Rauch, Frese and Utsch, 2011; Bruderl, Preisendorfer and Ziegler, 1992). An investment in industry specific and entrepreneurial experience increases the chances of success for a new venture. Entrepreneurship specific experience positively affects the profitability of the firm as the founder has acquired skills from previously owning a business and would be able to use these skills effectively in the new venture (Bosma et al, 2004).However, the research carried out by Haber and Reichel (2007) on high tech industries, highlights that education and previous e xperience had no effect on performance. As such, it may be argued that technical experience is more relevant to industries which use a more advanced technology as they require a high level of expertise and technical knowledge but as Ganotakis (2012) highlighted, technical experience should be complemented with managerial skills. Business education and management capability is thus very significant for the sustainability and survival of new ventures (Gimmon and Levies, 2009).Drawing on all that has been discussed, human capital characteristics especially industry specific and business skills would help in making more efficient strategic decisions which would also influence the venture performance. Business and finance skills could increase access to finance and good management of finance is crucial to profitability. Also, the social networks the founder has would enable him access finance and tap into knowledge of others which could affect the firm’s prospects. 5. CONCLUSION T his report examines the importance of human capital to the new venture.The contribution of this study is that it explored the effect of general and specific human capital attributes on the performance of new ventures, venture financing and strategic decision making based on review of past research works. An interesting finding is that industry-specific experience as opposed to general experience and managerial experience are found to play a major role in all three areas while education seems to be least relevant to decision making and performance but quite vital in attracting investors.The implications to prospective entrepreneurs are that they should enhance their business, managerial and commercial skills as this is vital to the survival of new ventures. Also, it is necessary for them to use their present organisation positions to build network ties as this can enable them tap into knowledge and gain access to finance. This study is limited as it focused on a narrow range of past research works and not only all human capital characteristics were considered. Future research should focus more on the impact of the all aspects of human capital most especially on strategic decision making.A meta-analysis of a wide range of research works could also be carried out. PERSONAL REFLECTION STATEMENT Entrepreneurship is an interesting subject and the reason for this is that at the core of entrepreneurship is the fact that something new is involved. It could be a new market or a new product. It generally involves starting a new business venture. I understood that in starting a new business venture, one of the first things to consider is the opportunities available. Opportunities arise from the environment and in this age, quite a number of them arise from advances in technology.It is necessary to consider the market for the product or service as for a product to sell in the market; it has to meet individual, societal or business needs. This course was enlightening and transcends beyond just starting a new ventures. There are implications for me as a future manager because I am motivated to find new ways of solving problems and exploring opportunities that surround my organization.The concepts of business strategies and maintaining a competitive advantage are important not only in entrepreneurial startups but in other areas of business.
